How You Can Protect and Restore Women’s Sex-Based Rights

Thanks to two generous donors, WoLF is excited to announce its Holiday $100K Match Challenge: Double Your Donation for Women & Girls!

Through December 31st, your year-end donation will be matched dollar-for-dollar up to $50,000 thanks to our match donors. This means your $50 gift funds $100 to WoLF for the vital legal defense of civil rights for women and girls!

$50,000 in GIFTS + $50,000 in Match grants = $100,000 for Women & Girls!

As the legal threats to the rights of women and girls in our country loom near, now is not the time to hold back. Thanks to our donors, WoLF embarked upon its first year with a team of staff working at the forefront of feminist activism: “gender identity” and its existential threat to the hard-won rights of women and girls.

This year, California and Maine effectively abolished women’s single-sex prisons. More “gender identity” prison bills are currently sitting in the legislative bodies of New York State, New Jersey, and Arizona, as well as the US House of Representatives. Like most of the feminist struggle, women will continue to advocate and fight the new misogyny that has defined recent years.

WoLF uplifts the voices of the most deafeningly silenced—our nation’s incarcerated women.

Where women have no escape from men

Few women are more vulnerable than those who are in the custody of the state. Across the country, incarcerated women are being locked up with men, many of whom have terrorized women. Male sex offenders who identify as “transgender” are currently housed with women under the stewardship of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) due to Senate Bill 132 (SB 132).

Through our diligent efforts to hold accountable the state of California for its SB 132, WoLF and Woman II Woman (WIIW), a prison advocacy group, have spoken to over 150 women currently and formerly incarcerated at California’s two most populous women’s prisons. These women have recounted the fear and pain of being housed with men in heartbreaking letters and phone calls. Hear a call with Michelle, an incarcerated woman in California, below.

Meet Nadia: A Woman Incarcerated in California

This year, an incarcerated woman named Nadia filed a grievance after multiple incidents with a man who had been placed in her unit…

In her grievance, SHE said:

“Men who feel unsafe are allowed to transfer from men’s prisons, but I have nowhere to transfer where I can feel safe, and I am forced to live in constant fear.”

Nadia, WoLF Lawsuit Plaintiff

The man in Nadia’s grievance is Michael Hernandez Contreras, who is serving a life sentence for multiple homicides. He has a fully intact penis, and he was transferred to Central California Women's Facility (CCWF) earlier this year.

Citing constitutional rights violations, WoLF demanded that California officials end the transfer of male inmates into women’s facilities and remove all those transferred to women's facilities. Our legal claims include violations of the First Amendment, Eighth Amendment, and Fourteenth Amendment—read the full letter here.

Recently, women incarcerated at CCWF and Women II Women retained WoLF to represent them in a civil rights lawsuit to overturn SB 132.
